Hiking is a fun outdoor sport. It is very easy for beginners. It not only offers good exercise, but it also involves getting out and enjoying nature and the outdoors. Here are a few things to consider before embarking on a hike: |
Always start small. Several greenways are less than one mile, one way. Let one of these trails be your first excursion. Several trails are five miles or longer and can be section hiked, meaning you complete the entire trail in bits and pieces over a period of time. Longer hikes can also be accomplished using two cars so you dont have to back track to your car at the start.
Take Care of Your Feet.We generally suggest that you wear hiking boots instead of shoes. Boots can really help prevent that twisted ankle or knee.
Be organized. Make sure you don't lock your keys in your vehicle. Take your trail brochure with you for reference. Let someone know where you're going and when you should be returning. Wear a watch.
Food and Water. Taking plenty of water so you dont get dehydrated is essential. It is also a good idea to pack some snacks to keep you sustained on your trip. Do not drink water directly from streams or lakes without treatment to protect you from Giardia parasites.
Think before you step. Complete common sense is sometimes lost in the excitement of the adventure. Keep an eye on the trail well in front of where you are walking.
Always carry out what you carry in. The first rule with interacting with the environment is: Leave it as you found it. This rule applies to the trees, the animals, and even the flowers. Carry out all of the garbage you carry in and leave only footsteps when you go.
Take regular breaks. Make sure that kids are drinking water. In very hot areas dehydration is especially dangerous.
Pace Yourself! Encourage kids not to exhaust themselves early in a hike. Sometimes little ones run at the beginning, run out of energy and have to be carried. Remember: it is not the destination that teaches, but the journey itself!
